2023 Volkswagen Taos
Volkswagen's Taos compact SUV was introduced in 2020 for the 2022 model year. Its introduction for the Canadian market corresponds to the discontinuation of the Golf. Once again, history repeats itself: manufacturers offer models that appeal more to consumers and Volkswagen is no exception. Obviously, the Taos returns in 2023 without having undergone major changes. The vehicle is produced at the Mexican plant in Puebla and built on the MQB platform, the one that served the seventh generation Golf. Remember that the Taos is smaller than the Tiguan, but it is very spacious for a vehicle in its class. In fact, subcompact SUVs generally offer little space, but in this regard, the Taos stands out.
Three versions are offered for the Taos for the 2023 model year: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The entry-level model is already well equipped: heated front seats, information and entertainment screen offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth technology, cruise control, a push-button start system, tire monitoring system, air conditioning and heated exterior mirrors. The Taos Comfortline offers a more complete list: an eight-inch screen, 18-inch alloy wheels, a rain-sensing system for the windshield wipers, Sirius satellite radio and electric driver's seat adjustments. If you prefer the top-of-the-line version, you get navigation, a panoramic sunroof and leather seats.
The engine of the Taos is the same as that of the current Jetta: 4-cylinder supercharged 1.5 liter. This engine produces 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Despite its small displacement, it does well and generates enough torque to provide very decent acceleration. In fact, reported fuel consumption is average with 8.8 liters per 100 km/h. The drivetrain is integral or transmitted to the front wheels, depending on the version chosen. In the first case, a seven-speed DSG box does the job. The two-wheel-drive option comes with an eight- speed automatic transmission instead.
The Taos demonstrates playful handling, its structure is solid, and it responds quickly to the slightest steering wheel. You can feel excellent chassis and suspension calibration in the way the Taos negotiates a curve. There is also good soundproofing of the cabin and more than acceptable fuel consumption.
